Platform as a service (PaaS) offerings will be introduced across different software companies and industries this year.

PaaS is the middle layer of the software stack for cloud services and is the predominant technology in the way that it intermediates between the underlying system infrastructure such as operating systems and networks, and overlaying application software.

As the years have gone on, this technology has become instrumental in application development tools, database management systems and business process management.

According to Gartner, enterprise software vendors, as well as large cloud specialists will introduce PaaS offerings to deliver new or strongly expanded features. It predicts that by the end of this year the battle for leadership in PaaS and the "key PaaS segments will engulf the software industry."

Android will take up 38% of the global smartphone market by 2016 as the industry doubles in size, according to an analyst report.

The latest report by researcher Ovum predicts smartphones running on Google's Android operating system (OS) will become the dominant platform within five years, accounting for 38% of the market - 21% more than Apple.

"The success of the Android platform is being driven by the sheer number of hardware vendors supporting it at both the high and low ends of the market," said Adam Leach, principal analyst at Ovum.

Ovum's forecast also suggests Microsoft's Windows Phone will overtake Blackberry, with 17.2% and 16.5% of market share respectively.

“Global enterprise information technology spending in 2011 will total some $2.5 trillion, or a 3 percent increase over the expected $2.4 trillion this year, with emerging markets outperforming mature sectors, according to figures compiled by researcher Gartner Inc.

“By 2014, worldwide enterprise spending on IT will rise 16 percent to $2.8 trillion, hampered from more vigorous growth by periods of hesitation and uncertainty, the researcher said.
